Become a Volunteer Deputy Registrar

A Volunteer Deputy Registrar or VDR is a volunteer trained and appointed by the county voter registrar to register voters in the county where they are appointed. Duties of a VDR include:

  • Providing applicants registration applications to voters
  • Assisting applicants in completing their voter registration application
  • Accepting and reviewing completed voter registration applications and giving applicants their receipts

Once you complete the required one-hour training and are appointed in one county, you can present your appointment certificate to any other county voter registrar and be appointed in that county. Each county may have additional procedures for registering voters, but you will not need to attend additional VDR training.

The Travis County Voter Registrar provides online synchronous training sessions using Zoom and asynchronous training sessions by watching this video and completing an exam. New sessions are added monthly.

Trainings are open to any Texas resident who is:

  • At least 18 years old
  • A United States citizen
  • A Texas resident

You cannot be:

  • Determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be totally, mentally incapacitated, or partially mentally incapacitated, without the right to vote.
  • Convicted of failing to deliver a voter application to a voter registrar.
  • Convicted of a felony or, if so convicted, you must be fully discharged of the sentence, including any term of incarceration, parole, or supervision, or completed a period of probation ordered by any court, or you were pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disability to vote. (“Off Paper”)
  • Convicted of identity theft under Sec. 32.51 of the Texas Penal Code.
